Texani i Variant sono Gary Langton alla Batteria, Erik Connolly alla chitarra, Mike Herrel al basso e Jerry Wengert alla voce ed alla chitarra, Jerry è anche il "main composer" della band, sue sono infatti prevalentemente le basi musicali ed i testi di questo "Beyond Jargon".
Fin dalla loro formazione i 4 musicisti americani si impongono come obiettivo e come via maestra da seguire quella di creare un sound che sia il più possibile unico ed originale e ad onor del vero con questo disco possiamo tranquillamente affermare che tale risultato è stato brillantemente raggiunto.

Il sound dei Variant è in qualche modo celato dietro al nome stesso del gruppo, la variabilità dei temi, degli sfondi, delle ambientazioni è proprio il fulcro ed il cuore della musica del gruppo statunitense, che riesce ad utilizzare e plasmare, più che miscelare, con molta bravura tutto quello spettro musicale che partendo da un Hard-Rock tipicamente di stampo americano e devoto a gruppi come ad esempio i Wishbone Ash percorre tutto il tragitto che attraverso il Progressive Rock porta il sentiero musicale verso i lidi più concreti e solidi dell'Heavy Metal classico, lo percorre come un viaggiatore, un cronista, un narratore, attento e scrupoloso nel raccontare con dovizia di particolari e con attenzione la sua avventura, riuscendo a colorare le atmosfere di toni che risultano prevalentemente cupi e pensierosi ma anche allegri e spensierati, epici e profondi, melodici e duri, il tutto giocando in modo estramamente convincente con le basi vocali ed i riff delle chitarre, compagne costanti, queste ultime, di questo nostro viaggio.

Perchè in definitiva questo è "Beyond Jargon", un viaggio, un racconto di quel formidabile panorama musicale che appunto va dall'Hard-Rock all'Heavy Metal, passando per il Rock Progressivo, un viaggio appassionante ma sopratutto un viaggio corale, in cui ognuno dei quattro validissimi musicisti da il suo contributo, ognuno dimostra chiaramente la propria abilità ma sempre senza cercare la "prevaricazione" strumentale nei confronti dei colleghi, ognuno all'interno del proprio spazio, certo è indubbio, come ho già accennato, che le chitarre di Erik Connolly e Jerry Wengert rappresentano un punto fermo e fondamentale nelle partiture dei Variant chitarre che a conti fatti sono le vere e proprie regine dell'album in grado di risultare le guide del nostro viaggio immaginario sia quando dipingono lo sfondo musicale con il riffing , sia quando ci indicano il sentiero con la melodia e sia quando ci stupiscono con assoli di pregevolissima fattura.
A conti fatti un songwriting originale, complesso ed estremamente interessante con partiture che non sono mai scontate nei loro passaggi, con canzoni che mantengono costantemente vivo l'interesse dell'ascoltatore, canzoni che risultano anche gradevolissime compagne anche nei momenti in cui siamo alla ricerca solo di un semplice sfondo musicale.

Un viaggio che inizia con la bellissima ed epica "March to War" dai movimenti decisamente Heavy, dove anche i testi risultano particolarmente interessanti e stimolanti, prosegue con la ballad dai ritmi comunque sempre vivi, di tipica scuola americana: "Today I Tried", toni cupi ed oscuri ritmi ridondanti e pulsanti nella tappa successiva, "None so Blind", i toni si mantengono oscuri ed i ritmi nuovamente Hard-Rock nella seguente "Deeds" con un ottimo passaggio di basso del bravo "Mike Harrell", è il turno del brano più lungo "Carrin' Carrion", con i suoi 10 minuti, con un inizio placido e aulico salvo poi accellerare decisamente i propri ritmi con riff marcatamente Heavy, decisamente conivolgenti e trascinanti a mio avviso uno dei brani migliori di "Beyond Jargon".
Il basso nuovamente in evidenza e tempi vagamente jazzati per l'apertura di "Going" un altro brano molto particolare ed interessante in cui i toni tornano ad essere più oscuri ed i ritmi più pacati, così come nella successiva "Regardless" in cui l'atmosfera si fa sempre più dark.
Veloce brano di passaggio completamente strumentale è invece "Reflections". La chiusura è affidata a "When the Lights on" dai tempi più vivi.

Un ottimo disco, quindi, capace di inchiodare l'ascoltore a seguirne lo scorrere con la massima attenzione mantenendo desta l'attenzione nota dopo nota ma ottimo anche come sottofondo e come accompagnamento spensierato, un viaggio da seguire insieme ai Variant ma anche al tempo stesso i Variant come eccellenti compagni di viaggio. Senza dubbio da ascoltare.

A lot of people think that in the Rock/Prog genre and in the musical range that goes from Hard Rock to Heavy Metal everything has already been said, and nothig else is worth to be played; that it is difficult or even impossible to meet or listen to somenthing really new. It probably is difficult, but not impossible at all; and the Variant are the proof.

From the very first days of their lives as a band, the four american musicians seek the goal to create a sound as original and unique as possible, and, to be honest, with this release we can say that the objective has been achieved.

The "variant sound" is in some way revealed by the very name of the band, the mixture of themes, sound and landscapes is the heart of this band's music; they can use and blend, more than mix, all the musical spectrum that goes from a tipically american Hard Rock getting inspiration from Wishbone Ash all the way through Progressive Rock to the more solid shores of classic Heavy Metal. They go through all this as a journeyman and as a journalist, precise in his telling the story, able to paint atmospheres that are mainly dark but also merry, deep, melodical and hard at the same time. All this while playing with the vocal bases and the guitars, constant companions of our journey.

This is, after all, "Beyond Jargon", a journey, a tale of the unique musical landscape going from Hard Rock to Heavy Metal, a journey where each of the four excellent musicians goes for his best, and declares his skillfulness never going beyond his role; each one inside his space. Erik Connolly and Jerry Wengert's guitars represent the starting grid for the Variant sound, they actually reign on our journey both when they paint the landscape with their riffing , as when they show us the road with their melody, as when they some excellent lead guitars.

The songwriting is original, complex and extremely interesting, never predictable, the songs keep constantly alive the interest of the listener, and can even be good companions when we are just seeking a nice musical background.

The journey starts with the epic and beautiful "March to War" with a definitely heavy attitude, where even the lirycs are quite interesting and stimulating; goes on with "Today I Tried", a ballad with a tipical american school sound; The journey starts with the epic and beautiful "March to War" with a definitely heavy attitude, where even the lirycs are quite interesting and stimulating; goes on with "Today I Tried", a ballad with a tipical american school sound; followed by the dark sound of "None so Blind"; dark landscapes again, but with Hard Rock rythms, in "Deeds" with an excellent bass by Mike Harrell; is now time for the longest song, "Carrin' Carrion", a ten minutes long song that starts smoothly, but goes on accellerating and getting definitely Heavy, possibly the best song in the album "Beyond Jargon".
The bass is again the main character, although "jazzy" when "Going" starts. A very particular and interesting song where the sound gets dark again, like in the following song "Regardless".
The short and instrumental "Reflections" preludes to the last song : "When the Lights on" With a very lively rythm.

All in all a good release,that can nail you to the chair while trying to follow the flow of sounds, but can as well be an excellent journey companion. A journey in company of the Variant. Definitely to be listened to.
