James Raymond (CPR, David Crosby, Crosby-Nash, CSN)

- SCROLL DOWN FOR ENGLISH VERSION -

Cantautore e compositore affermato, James Raymond è autore di colonne sonore di film ("Knucklehead" e "That's What I Am") spot e produzioni televisive ("Roundhouse", "To Have and To Hold", "Jack & Jill", "The Client", "L.A. Doctors", "Justice League of America" e "The Sender").

Attualmente sto lavorando a diversi progetti discografici come produttore e autore.

A&B

JAMES - Attualmente no.

A&B - E con Jeff Pevar?

JAMES - Sì! Geoff e io stiamo lavorando insieme a un nuovo progetto chiamato "Lookout Mountain - The music of Laurel Canyon".

In seguito hai continuato a collaborare con tuo padre su "Croz" (7 su 11 canzoni), "Sky Trails" (5 su 10) e "For Free" (7 su 10).

An accomplished songwriter and composer, James was Musical Director for the hit Nickelodeon series “Roundhouse” for all three successful seasons. He has written and produced for numerous projects, including three television spots for the prestigious New York ad agency Satchii & Satchii as well as three national AT&T spots and recently a Tylenol spot. Television arrangements include work for CBS’s “The Client” and “L.A. Doctors”, additional music for “Justice League of America”, HBO’s “The Sender”, the CBS pilot “To Have and To Hold“ and the second season of the WB series, “Jack & Jill”. In addition, James was hired to score the WWE Studios feature films ‘Knucklehead’ and ‘That’s What I Am’ set for release in 2010. In June 1998, he and his biological father, David Crosby, formed CPR (featuring guitarist Jeff Pevar), releasing two studio albums and two live albums. He has since collaborated with David Crosby as a solo artist and with the bands Crosby/Nash and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

A&B - Ciao James, It's a real pleasure talking to you

JAMES - Ciao, it’s a pleasure to talk to you as well

A&B - First of all, I would like to know something about your current projects...

JAMES - Thank you so much! I’ve got several album projects I’m working on as a producer and writer. I’m doing a full length album with a great friend And collaborator Jono Manson who is also a songwriter and producer. We met when I first moved here to Santa Fe, New Mexico and we hit it off and just started writing songs together. One of our songs which included Vocals by KT Tunstall Recently won in New Mexico Music award. I’m also producing records for a few other New Mexico songwriters. I’m also working on a solo instrumental record of mine. I also have an EDM project with another friend and collaborator. I’d like to stay busy!

A&B - Besides your collaboration with your father, David Crosby, which we'll discuss later, you lately contributed to the recording of Gracie Ray's "Nighthawk". Can you tell us about this project?

JAMES - Yes! During the pandemic my daughter Gracie came to me and asked if we could work on Music. She’s a talented singer and songwriter. So we worked up a few songs and she got signed to BMG Europe. We were really proud of the EP That Bmg didn’t support it very much and they ended up firing pretty much everybody at the company and she lost her deal. I’m hoping she’ll find her way back to Music soon.

A&B - I was lucky seeing CPR live (Milan, July 19, 2001). I remember an extremely close-knit band, with great chemistry between the musicians. What are your memories of that period?

JAMES - That was a great show I remember! I think that’s when we really were clicking on all cylinders as a band. We were so excited about playing those songs live. That was a real high point for me touring Europe with Croz And the guys.

A&B - I think that CPR played excellent music, better, in my opinion, to all the music post '70 of CSN and CSN&Y. Do you agree?

JAMES - I do agree with that. I think the sophistication and musicality of what we were doing was superior to anything coming out of that camp.

A&B - Why CPR disbanded in 2004?

JAMES - It wasn’t making enough money to sustain itself. So we had to leave it behind and cross focused on the solo records we did together entering with the Crosby band.

A&B - You collaborated also with the Crosby-Nash duo and with Crosby, Stills, Nash. What are the differences between your partnership with Crosby and your experience working for these historic bands?

JAMES - It was great for me to be able to contribute some songs to the Crosby Nash album. I really enjoyed turning in that configuration as well. The CSN tours were great from a financial standpoint for me. Musically though there was not much to do it was fairly boring.

A&B - During your career, have you ever had the opportunity to collaborate with, or even meet, Neil Young?

JAMES - Yes, I Co wrote with Crosby the song "Stand and Be Counted", on the CSNY album "Looking Forward"... we smoked a joint together several times. He’s a great dude.

A&B - Are you in touch with Graham Nash, Stephen Stills or Neil Young?

JAMES - I am not.

A&B - And with Jeff Pevar?

JAMES - Yes! Geoff and I are actually working together on a new project called Lookout Mountain- The music of Laurel Canyon. We have an All-Star band put together and our first gig is at the Lobero in Santa Barbara November 13. Will be playing the music that came out of Laurel Canyon between 1968 1972. A lot of great stuff. Will be taking this out on the road next year and hopefully Europe eventually. The other players and the band are Steve Postell, Andrew Ford, Kiki Ebsen, Kipp Lennon, and Gary Novak.

A&B - You wrote or co-wrote 6/11 songs on CPR's first album and 8/12 on "Just Like Gravity," CPR' second album. You later continued to contribute with your father on "Croz" (7/11 songs), "Sky Trails" (5/10), and "For Free" (7/10). Your delicate songwriting blended perfectly with David Crosby's rarefied magnetic quality. I believe you were already ready for a solo album back then, but 25 years later, it hasn't happened yet. Why?

JAMES - I’ve been busy more in the service of other Artists. I developed a problem with my voice about 15 years ago so I don’t really sing lead anymore. I do sing lower harmonies though. I enjoy writing and producing for other people and working in the Studio very much.

A&B - Is there any unreleased material by David Crosby, with CPR or as a solo artist?

JAMES - There are a couple of tunes that Croz and I finished for a new record But will probably never see the light of day unfortunately because of problems with his estate.

A&B - Over the years, I've interviewed Jeff Pevar twice (the first one here, the second one here). In the last interview he offered a very moving memory of David Crosby.
I'd also like your personal recollections of your father, the singer and musician.

JAMES - I will just say that I miss him dearly and I think about him all the time. His influence on my music carries on in many ways.

A&B - Final words for Italian fans and A&B readers.

JAMES - I would just like to say that my Italian friends and fans are the best. Just last month, I was lucky enough to spend a week in Tuscany at a villa with some friends. We were in Greve in Chianti And it was absolutely beautiful. I’m so looking forward to coming back to play music either with Jono Manson or the Lookout Mountain Band. I first travelled around Italy as a keyboardist for Giorgia And fell in love with Italy. My favourite country in Europe and my favourite people!
