Intervista

A&B: Ciao John.
John Payne: Ciao Gianluca.

John Payne:
Adoro andare in tour.

A&B: Altri progetti in corso?
John Payne:

A&B: Puoi darci qualche notizia sugli Asia FJP?
John Payne:

A&B: Ho recensito "Recollections.

Come potrò ascoltare dal vivo brani eccellenti come "Free", "Awake", "Arena" e "Who Will Stop The Rain"?
John Payne:

A&B: Verrai a suonare in Italia? E con quale band?
John Payne:

ENGLISH VERSION

Introduction (Gianluca Livi)

Best known as the lead singer and bassist of Asia's second era (from 1992 to 2006), John Payne is the founder of Asia featuring John Payne (formed in 2007, following a schism in the lineup of Asia) and a founding and current member of modern progressive rock band GPS. He is also a member of Dukes of the Orient, with various members and ex-members of Asia FJP as collaborators.
Recently, he is involved in Intelligent Music Project IV, founded by drummer Simon Phillips and Bulgarian composer Milen Vrabevski, who assembled an all-star band featuring Joseph Williams, Carl Sentance and many more musicians.

Interview (Gianluca Livi)

A&B: Ciao John. First of all, how are you and how did you spend the lockdown period?
John Payne:
Ciao Gianluca. Luckily, I have a large analog recording studio at home. So, some of the time was spent creating. However, it’s been hard not touring or traveling. I miss that. It’s been a frustrating time.

A&B: Can you tell me about your current project, Intelligent Music Project?
John Payne:
IMP is a very cool project that I’ve now been involved with for several years. I’m honored to still be involved and proud of its musical integrity.

A&B: How did you meet the others members and how did you work together?
John Payne:
The great Simon Phillips initially got hold of me to be part of this. Since my involvement some was done when I went to Sofia, Bulgaria and more recent tracking was done here in my studio in Las Vegas.

A&B: What are the connections with Milen Vrabevski?
John Payne:
Milen is a very interesting guy. He never stops. Besides his very successful businesses, his philanthropic work and being a family man, he has time to write, arrange and produce these great songs and projects. Quite amazing really.
Apart from this he’s a great guy and we’ve had some good times outside of the studio.

A&B: Do you think you will go on tour soon (if the general conditions allow it, of course)?
John Payne:
I always love touring. The current situation has really changed the live world and I don’t know when it will change. But if there’s a tour there will be a good chance I will be part of it.

A&B: Will your live set include pieces from Toto, Asia, Rainbow and River hounds?
John Payne:
DIdn’t think of that as there is a huge catalog of songs with IMP but perhaps that’s a good idea at the end of the set.

A&B: I hope you will include just the Asia songs of the Payne era and not the Wetton era (your repertoire is elegant, stylistically perfect, an excellent balance between harmony, melody and rock, while Wetton's repertoire is excellent too, of course, but sometimes just a little bloated).
John Payne:
Thanks. I really enjoyed writing and performing those songs from my era.

A&B: Any others current projects?
John Payne:
I’m working on a new Asia FJP album right now, producing a couple of other things and also just finished the second Dukes of the Orient album for Inside Out to be released in August.

A&B: Can you give us some news about Asia featuring John Payne?
John Payne:
We did have a bunch of US shows this year that either got cancelled or rescheduled. As I mentioned earlier there will be a new album!

A&B: What is the currnet line up of Asia FJP?
John Payne:
Jeff Kollman and Moni Scaria on guitars, Johnathon Gilcrest on keyboards and Johnny Fedevich on drums.

A&B: I reviewed “Recollections. A tribute to british Prog" and I spent an excellent opinion (apart from the Tull piece. Here my review). I listened to a very cohesive band. Why you did a cover album?
John Payne:
Thanks again. I did a covers album because really I did not have time to write a new one as during that time I was in a rock show 5 nights a week in Las Vegas.

A&B: Let's talk about your relationship with Geoff Downes. About one year ago, I tried to interview him but, when I asked about Asia and the Payne era, he refused to release the interview ("declined because of all the references to John Payne who is not involved with Asia"). Aren't your relationships so good?

John Payne: Geoff and I had a parting of the waves some time ago when original Asia reformed.
It’s sad that he would do that as it’s history but that’s his prerogative.
Perhaps one day...

A&B: When John Wetton passed away, I was sure you would rejoin the band...
John Payne:
I’m not sure.

A&B: Would you have liked to join the band again?
John Payne:
I never say never.

A&B: Did you listen to the post Payne-era-Asia records and what do you think about them?
John Payne:
I heard some of the post my era records. They had a softer approach than previous.
Obviously, it was great to hear John Wetton again. I liked “The Bridge; his voice is so iconic.

A&B: I absolutely love all the Asia releases of the Payne era. How I can listen to great tracks in concert like "Free", "Awake", "Arena" and "Who Will Stop The Rain"?
John Payne:
We plan to re-release all my Asia back catalog at some stage.

A&B: Will you come to play in Italy and with which band?
John Payne:
It’s been a while. I love Italy. If a promoter asks us. We will be there.

A&B: Last words for our readers and for the Italian public.
John Payne:
I would like to thank all our Italian followers so much for their continued support. We love you!
