A&B: Ciao Johan, ciao Nicka.

Nicka & Johan:
Ciao!

Wow!".
Grazie mille. Siamo veramente grati e riconoscenti. Significa molto per noi. Saremo ben lieti di fare un'intervista. Teniamoci in contatto. Ci sentiamo presto. Cheers!".

Nicka: Grazie mille.

Solo "Artists and Bands" è rimasta folgorata ascoltando il vostro album?
Nicka: Questo ci onora molto, Gianluca!

Possiamo solo sperare e sognare. E continuare a lavorare.
Nicka: Hahaha.

Nicka: Dobbiamo davvero rivelarlo? No, non siamo bambini.

Nicka: La nostra musica è naturalmente disponibile sulle piattaforme digitali e in streaming.

Nicka: In realtà no!

A&B: So che Stefan Helleblad è coinvolto nei Within Temptation.

Vedremo!

Stateci bene!

ENGLISH VERSION

Introduction:

JONO inaugurate the editorial "Record of the month" with "Silence" (it was just this record to give us the idea for the new section), a extraordinary album, a genuine example of fine art and engaging, perfect mix of Queen vocal harmonies, Supertramp melodies, modern rock of  Muse, prog imprinting of Kansas (here our review). Singer and drummer of the group, Johan Norrby and Nicka Hellenberg, talk about their record and new projects.

Interview:

A&B: Ciao Johan, ciao Nicka,

Nicka & Johan:
Ciao! Thank you for making this interview!

A&B: First of all, there are some good vibrations between us and I want to share them with Italian readers reporting our initials emails. Receiving the cd, some days ago, I immediately wrote you as following: "Hey, Which Galaxy are you from? Cd arrived yesterday, heard this morning, reviewed 5 minutes ago. This is not an album, this is THE ALBUM. Tomorrow morning the review will be on the home page with the highest score I ever posted in my life for a record (100/100). I never contacted a band before publishing a review of their record. I never put a score so high for a record in my life. You are a fucking trip. I have to find your first two albums. I have to interview you. Wow!". And you answered exactly this: "Wow. This is the most fantastic mail. Thank you so much. We are truly thankful and grateful. It means a lot. We would gladly do an interview. Let's keep in touch. Talk to you soon. All the best! Cheers."
And now we can start with the interview.

A&B: Listening to your last album, "Silence", I thought that the "deal with the Devil" was a thing of the past. What's incredible, terrific, magnificent music!
Johan: Silence has a mixture of different moods I think a good album should contain. I always try to write songs that I would like to hear on an album of any of my favorite artists. I like many different styles of music, and somehow they come out this way when I compose.
Nicka: It’s a privilege to hear that people really like what we are up to. Our goal was to make music we would like to hear ourselves.

The third album "Silence" (2015)

A&B: Johan, your voice is so beautiful, so ecstatic. Did Brian May and Roger Taylor contact you before choosing Paul Rodgers? Seriously: in addition to Freddy Mercury, who are the other singers you choose a model?
Johan: Well, here are some of my favorite singers: Freddie Mercury, Ronnie James Dio, Steve Walsh, David Byron, Dennis DeYoung and Michael Sadler.

A&B: Nicka, you clearly are a great drummer. Was it hard to limit your virtuoso technique on the album?
Nicka: Thank you so much. I’m not sure if I consider myself a virtuoso. What I think I’ve been better and better at over the years is to really play for what the song needs. Of course, I love listening to a lot of the great master wizards of drums – in all type of genres. And I love to sometimes “go for it”, but the most important thing is to find out what I think suits the song. Jono is not about playing the hardest technical stuff or doing a lot of intricate, progressive maneuvers. It’s more about finding the feel of the song, and to make everything sound “in place” musical wise. But, that of course goes very much for all of the instruments, not only the drums!

A&B: "Silence" is "Album of the month" in "Artists and Bands". Before this month, didn't exist an editorial called "Album of the month": in fact, "Silence" given me the idea to launch the initiative. Is this the power of Silence? Only "Artists and Bands" remained thunderstruck listen to your album?
Nicka: That’s very honoring, Gianluca! We have been blessed with a lot of great reviews for “Silence”. But not everyone has given it maximum points. But, yeah … some have, which feels great!

A&B: I am sure that it is only a matter of time: maximum 6 months, you will enter into the music business. There is a little voice inside me that suggested me to contact you before you became unattainable...

Johan: Thank you for believing in us! We can only hope and dream. And keep on working.
Nicka: Hahaha. We really hope that we will enter the music business for real with Jono soon. But on the other hand … We’ve been playing and doing music for so long, that we take nothing for granted. I promise you not that to become unattainable.

A&B: Did you sent your CDs to EMI, Sony, Warner or others majors?
Nicka: Yeah, we’ve been trying to reach most of the record companies out there, sending them our music, quoting the great reviews and so forth. Not only the big major companies, but also some of the more specialized record companies have been contacted. Very few have answered us at all … They must be busy finding the next 17-year-old pop star, or they might not believe in what we do.

A&B: Looking at your photos, you're not kids. How old are the members of Jono?
Nicka: Do we really have to tell you? No, we’re not kids. We all actually got kids ourselves.  We’ve been around quite some time now.

A&B: The Jono formula liberally draws from the 70’s (in particular bands like Supertramp, Mr. Big (british), City Boy and the majestic Queen), and filters in a modern taste, better than Muse. Do you agree?
Johan: I agree! It’s the music at least I grew up listening to: Queen; Sparks, Supertramp, E.L.O, Kansas and more.

A&B: Tell me about your albums. About "Silence", the booklet of the cd it says that Johan Norrby has composed music and lyrics. On your site, you say: "The album is yet again mainly written by Johan Norrby, co-written and arranged by Jono. In short, who wrote music and lyrics of "Silence"?
Nicka: Johan writes all the songs and lyrics. When we meet in rehearsals we are all involved in arranging, changing stuff and put it all together as the songs you hear on the album, giving the songs our “touch”. And since we, musically, have a bit different backgrounds it all melts together into what hopefully makes Jono sound just like Jono. We all have a saying in the producing parts, and our guitarist Stefan Helleblad of course is doing a fantastic job mixing the album! But Johan Norrby is the master mind in writing the songs. I think he’s a genius in that sense.

A&B: I haven’t listened to Requiem yet. Reading the web, it is described as more prog oriented than "Silence". Is it true?
Nicka: I wouldn’t say more “progressive”. It may not have the amount of “catchy” tunes as Silence do, but it’s very much Jono. As a whole Silence sounds more as what Jono sounds like live, or in the rehearsal room.
Johan: Yes, I think Silence have a more direct feel to it. But both the light and shade are still there, on both albums …  and the drama too.

A&B: "JONO", released in 2006...
Johan: It´s what you would expect from a first album, I guess. The songs are all right, but the arrangements are not there yet. It weighs a little bit lighter than Silence.

The second album "Requiem" (2013)

A&B: Did you sell your music out of Sweden?
Nicka: It’s of course available on the streaming/digital platforms out there. But the CD is also available through www.aorheaven.com and a few other web shops. But since we don’t have any major distribution deal going on you won’t find the cd in stores everywhere. Unfortunately.

A&B: Have someone (which in that case must have been an insane fool) reviewed your music talking negative about it?
Nicka: Actually no! But of course we don’t know if someone hated us and chose not to publish the review. So far we’ve been getting mostly fantastic reviews. It’s heart warming to read!

A&B: Your songs are quite short. Since you have a '70s background, can we expect - during yours live gigs - long improvisation, impromptu, jams, virtuoso solos in the style of some great rock bands of that decade? For example, Nicka, do you play long drum solo in the style of Moby Dick or The Mule?
Johan: The songs differ in length, Opus is a longer piece, and I have written a song for the next Album called “In The Mind Of A Stranger” that is somewhere around 10 minutes long …
Nicka: No drum solos in Jono. So far, I should say! I might try to steal the show, when no one is expecting it! Ha ha ha! No, I don’t think that’s what we want to do. Some of the songs might have a slightly changed live arrangement, but as a whole we are trying to perform the songs the way they feel the best. We’re using dynamics very distinctly. We love to make the songs breath and get to life, by playing both very soft and more intense and loud, when needed. Those dynamics are a very important part of Jono’s music!

A&B: Did you play - or you will play - out of Sweden?
Nicka: We will – as soon as we get a real tour together! We’re looking forward to it big time!

A&B: I know that Stefan Helleblad is involved in Within Temptation. What are the side projects of other members?
Nicka: We all do gigs, in different settings, and some recordings, writing some music and playing with other musicians and doing some stuff as “hired musicians”. But we all agree on the fact that Jono is our “family”. All other projects would probably be left behind the day Jono really took off! This is our music, something that we put our time, soul and heart into – and have been doing for so many years!

A&B: Is there another Jono album released within the next year or so?
Johan: Nothing is settled yet. But hopefully we will record another album next fall or so.

The first album "Jono" (2006)

A&B: I mainly listen to music on vinyl. Can we hope that your music will be printed on vinyl?
Johan: We have talked about printing 100 LP’s of the Silence album – for selling to hardcore fans. We’ll see!

A&B: Will you come to Italy for some gigs, in the future?
Nicka: We really hope so. The sooner, the better! Our plan is to make Jono happen wherever there’s an audience who appreciate our music. We are pretty sure that our music has got a better chance of growing big in countries like Italy, Spain, Germany, England and Russia than in Sweden.

A&B: Last words for Italian fans?
Johan: Hope to see you real soon!
Nicka: Thanx a lot for listening to our music. It means everything. Spread the word! Take care out there!
